Accessiblity Features
Accessibility Features on My Computer:
Identify the accessibility features on the computer you use for this
class. Try them out to see what they do. Identify the types of
disabilities that might be accommodated with each accessibility feature.
In your posts discuss the operating system you were using and the
accessibility features available. Describe how someone with one or more
specified disabilities would benefit from using these devices.
Windows 7
Windows 7 has numerous assistive technology features. They include a magnifier, keyboard shortcuts, visual notifications, captions, sticky keys, mouse keys, filter keys, on-screen keyboard, narrator, speech recognition, change of text size, personalization and a whole ‘ease of access’ center.
The features I use for this class are keyboard shortcuts and text prediction - speed, magnifier - to view detail/pictures, visual notification - alerts me to changes/saving/updates, change of text size, and the personalization option. I have also changed the speed of the cursor as well as the movement sensitivity of the scroll bars.
There are so many features that cater to numerous disabilities.
There are many features that people now take for granted because we don’t think of them as assistive, but as necessity such as the shortcut keys, earphone & microphone jacks, volume control, and mouse buttons. Most computers on the market today can assist many of the disabilities students may have. If the computer does not offer the assistive program there are millions of online sites and software that are accessible or downloadable for assistive devices.

- Color-blindness - Changing the color features
- Visually impaired - the large text size, visual/audio cues, on-screen keyboard, speech recognition
- Mobility such as Loss of arm/hand - sticky keys, mouse keys, on-screen keyboard, speech recognition, filter keys
- Hearing impaired - visual notifications, captions, ear phone jack
- ADHD - decrease of background colors, blinking rates, filter keys. (Many of these become overwhelming for this type of student)
